Article Submission Guidelines

We welcome all nature enthusiasts to submit their articles for publication on the Nature Photographers Network.

The type of articles we are looking for fall under the following categories:

  • Creative Articles
  • Technical Articles
  • Environmental Articles

Before submitting an article to NPN, you must review the Articles page. This will help you understand what has been published, the topics, and how the articles are formatted.

General Guidelines

When evaluating submissions, the editor of NPN looks for articles that contain novel and intriguing ideas, which are paired with outstanding photographs to support the text. It is essential for the writing to be clear and concise, and articles that are well-written and thoroughly proofread have the greatest chance of being accepted for publication.

Quick Tip: Have someone outside the nature photography field read your article before submitting it to NPN. This will help you determine if your writing is clear and concise enough for everyone to read – whether within the industry or outside of it.

Also, the article should be:

  • Wholly original and not previously published; this includes other publications and your website.
  • At least 1500 words in length; more is preferred, but there should not be fluff.
  • Submitted with at least one high-quality photograph for every 200 words of text length.
  • Photographs should be formatted at 1500px on the long edge, at a quality of 6 or 60.
  • Submitted with a short biography and photograph of the author, links to the author’s website and social media platforms are also accepted.

Creative Articles

Creative articles encompass a wide variety of topics, allowing you, as the author, to have freedom with your writing. While NPN will not publish an article simply because it is submitted under this category, we are open to fresh ideas that may not fit comfortably within the Technical and Environmental categories below. Specifically, we are looking for in-depth articles that dive deep into art theory, the philosophy and psychology behind the art, and more.

Examples:

Technical Articles

While NPN has almost exclusively focused on Creative Articles from various authors and will continue to place a heavier focus on these topics, we will consider technical articles that go in-depth into a subject. We are not looking to publish articles that appear all-too-frequently in other publications; topics such as Top Ten Tips… or Composition Rules for Beginners will not be considered.

Specifically, we are looking for in-depth articles that dive into composition, post-processing, color theory, and more.

Examples:

Environmental Articles

NPN has always stood by organizations such as Nature First, and Leave No Trace, along with their principles. Namely, learning more about your environment and how to protect it. Because of this, it is only natural for NPN to introduce a new section of articles that delve into these ideals.

Specifically, we are looking for in-depth articles such as our impact on the environment as photographers, what we can do to help the environment, ways to learn more about the world around us, and more.
