...I love the luminosity and contrast in this scene. It is also quite monochromatic and there is some lovely atmosphere. The one that is affecting me the most is geometry. If you were to draw a line through every shadow, you will see how strongly the image pulls you down to the bottom left. Even the leftward lean of the far left set of trees just drifts us left. I feel that quite disturbing, and quite discomfiting....

...I think it has a little balance issue in the area of luminosity. The bottom and right sides of the frame are much brighter than the top and left. Also, there are dark areas throughout that are a bit too shadowy and contrasty for my taste (just because most of the image feels very light and graceful), which might not be a big issue except that those areas are mostly distributed on the top and right, with not enough darkness to balance them out in the lower-left, so they feel more intrusive...

...Let’s get right into this! I like how you composed this scene. The soft side light works perfectly with this landscape. I think the issue with this image is that all your tones are blending together. You don’t have much separation. Foreground, mid ground and background all look the same. We have to figure out a way to separate those areas. I think the first thing I would do is address the shadows…not by brightening, but making them cooler. If you use TK luminosity masks, I’d select one of the dark masks, and use a color balance adjustment layer on that luminosity mask/selection, and add blue + cyan in small amounts so you can separate those shadows from the lighter areas. I think the mid ground can use some separation from the foreground and background as well. In cases like this i’ll change the tonal values for all 3 areas( FG, mid, BG) and paint those adjustments in selectively...

...I think the composition here is fine, I love the spotlight on the group of trees in the center against the dark background, and that strip of sunlit mist on the lake looks great. My only issue compositionally is the little speckles of light on the trees against the left edge. I would work on toning those down a little more either spot healing some of them out or killing them with some darkness/reduced contrast so they feel flat, some color adjustments would be needed too in order to cool them down...
