The NPN app for iPhone and iPad is another way to use the NPN community. It uses the same account as the website. When you sign in, the app opens NPN’s own sign-in page, so the app itself never sees your password.
When you use the app, we receive the same information as when you use the community on the web. This includes your name, email address and username, the posts, replies and photographs you share, any reports you file about other posts, and the technical details our community software records when you’re signed in, such as your IP address, device type, when you last visited and which days you visited.
Photographs are re-encoded on your device before they are uploaded. This removes all embedded metadata, including the location where the photograph was made and camera settings such as aperture, shutter speed and ISO. Photographs uploaded through the website keep their embedded metadata.
If you turn on notifications, Apple gives your device a push notification token. The app sends that token to a small service we run on Cloudflare, which stores it with your NPN username so we can let you know when someone replies to your work. To deliver a notification, our service passes a short excerpt of the reply to Apple’s push notification service, which sends it to your device. We don’t keep the content of notifications after they are sent.
Signing out of the app removes your token. If you delete the app, we remove the token once Apple tells us it is no longer valid, which usually happens the next time we try to send you a notification. You can also turn notifications off at any time in your device’s Settings.
The app contains no advertising, analytics or tracking, and we don’t share data from it with third parties for their own purposes. The analytics and tracking tools listed above are used on our websites only. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in your device’s settings, Apple may send us crash reports, which we use only to fix problems in the app.
You can ask us to delete your account from within the app, under Account → Delete account. On the day we receive your request, we turn off your membership’s automatic renewal and unsubscribe you from NPN Insight, so you won’t be billed again. We complete the rest of the deletion within 7 days.
Your posts and photographs are handled the same way as any other account deletion, as described under Account Deletion & Forum Integrity above.
